As photo shoots go awry, profile subjects go berserk, and writers go on benders-some things don't change-the novel, like its main character, never lets the energy flag. Mallon, in his other books, has gravitated toward previous eras out of an affinity for something like reticence. "Bandbox," then, is a real departure: antic, stylized, and up-tempo.   But just in case you weren’t paying close attention, we can confirm that team Bandbox pulled out all the stops for Vol. 1, selecting albums from legit rock & roll titan Young Neil. Of course, that’s Neil Young to most of us.

If you’re really, really wary of surprises, Team Bandbox will even let you tap out of your subscription by pressing “pause” on your sub any time you like. It’s unlikely you’ll want to “pause” anything once you’ve signed up and experienced Bandbox for yourself.   I thought I’d have a go at the celebration at Stuck in a Book and Kaggsy’s Bookish Ramblings, so I did a hasty breakfast-time search on Project Gutenberg and downloaded The Bandbox for my week’s commuting. By the time I noticed it wasn’t published in , it was too late, still I don’t regret it, because this is a rock-solid book.
